On Water Rowing Drills 1.  Square blades gradual build up: This warm up is very short and effective. It gradually starts you from arms only rowing to full slide rowing. Depending on skill level you can complete this exercise in pairs or full crew. It goes in the method listed below -Arms only square blades -Arms and bodies square blades -1/4 slide square blades -1/2 slide square blades -3/4 slide square blades - Full slide square blades At the end of the exercise you are already rowing full slide so it is easy to continue. 2.  Feet out: By removing your feet from the shoes this exercise allows you to experiment with the amount of lay back and rock over. -Take feet out of shoes -Row in pairs or fours experimenting with your balance. 3.  1/4, 1/2 or 3/4 slide checks This exercise allows you to break up the stroke and focus on the individual elements. This simple stretch will assist with your rock over. A good rock over is vital as it allows you to take a good stroke. This stretch allows you to strengthen and stretch your hamstrings. Your hamstrings provide lots of power during the stroke so it is important to have them strong and healthy. This stretch allows you to strengthen and stretch your quads. Your quads provided lots of power during the stroke therefore it is vital to have strong quads. Rowing General Tips and Tricks When trying to row you need everything to be perfect. These simple tips and tricks have been passed down to help you make the perfect stroke. 1. Always look forward Also known as keeping your head in the boat this simple trick improves you balance. Rowing boats are very unstable and the slightest movement can change the balance. Having an unstable boat can rapidly reduce the speed of the boat. This simple trick may seem insignificant but it improve your overall rowing technique and speed. All team members are looking forward 2. Seat Pad If you have longer legs you may feel bunched up at the catch (finish). This can be resolved using a seat pad. The pad allows you sit higher allowing more room for your legs. You can buy seat pads from Sykes (link below) or create your own out of foam. Australian Rowers Around the World Australia is a very competitive force on the world rowing stage. Australians both young and old travel around the world to row for Australia. Below are some of the recent achievements of Australian rowers. Australia crowned Junior World Champions in the Men’s Double Scull Kennedy-Leverett and Fergus Hamilton won gold in Lithunia. The Junior Men's Double Scull was crowned World Rowing Junior Champions after a convincing win. This duo is expected to take out more gold in upcoming events. U23 Men's Four crowned World Champions in Bulgaria In Plovdiv, Bulgaria, the Australian U23 Men's Four won gold. Narrowly beating England, the men were extremely proud of there accomplishment.
